The annual consultative meetings between the government team and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission concluded in the Jordanian capital Amman today.
During the five-day meetings, they discussed a number of aspects related to the latest economic, financial and monetary developments and their future prospects, as well as the government’s plan and vision to face the current challenges, implement the necessary reforms and achieve economic recovery with regional and international support.
The meetings also touched on the extent of the worsening humanitarian crisis and food insecurity in Yemen, due to the conflict and regional tension, the continuation of the war ignited by the Houthi terrorist militia supported by the Iranian regime for 10 years, as well as the great challenges faced by fiscal and monetary policies, and the disastrous effects of the economic war by the Houthi militia, which the new US administration has reclassified as a “foreign terrorist organization.” The meetings also discussed the extent of the humanitarian crisis and food insecurity in Yemen.
The meetings between the government and the IMF emphasized Yemen’s need, under the current difficult circumstances, for continued regional and international support for national efforts aimed at stabilizing commodity prices and the national currency, continuing to implement the necessary and urgent reforms, especially in the financial and monetary aspects, achieving economic recovery, and overcoming the challenges the country faces in various fields and vital sectors.
The IMF mission expressed its encouragement for the progress made by the Ministry of Finance in containing the public finance deficit by strengthening tax and customs administrations, enhancing liquidity management, and exercising caution in spending, which in turn led to limiting cash financing of the budget and reducing inflationary pressures. The mission also expressed its support for the comprehensive reforms undertaken by the Yemeni government in the economic, financial, monetary and administrative aspects aimed at promoting economic recovery and improving the standard of living.
The mission also stressed the need for continued regional and international support for the government’s efforts to achieve the goals of comprehensive reforms, revitalize the political process and achieve peace, security and stability in Yemen, in order to reduce the exacerbation of humanitarian crises and the deterioration of basic services, as well as work to improve the living lives of citizens, and stabilize and improve the national economy in general.
