Yemen Customs Authority (YCA) participates in the 15th Arab meeting to combat illicit arms trafficking

YCZ participated in the 15th meeting of the Arab National Contact Points for the United Nations Program of Action to Combat the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons, which was held at the headquarters of the League of Arab States in the Egyptian capital Cairo, with the participation of representatives of 15 Arab countries.

The meeting discussed the progress made in the implementation of the cooperation project between the League of Arab States and the European Union, which aims to support Arab countries in combating the illicit proliferation of small arms and light weapons. The first phase of the project was launched in 2019, and the third phase, which extends until 2027, is currently being implemented, and seven Arab countries have so far benefited from capacity building programs within this phase.
The meeting also touched on preparations for Arab participation in the ninth meeting to follow up the implementation of the Program of Action, to be held in New York from June 1 to 5, 2026, where participants affirmed the importance of effective attendance, and agreed on a number of visions and proposals to be included in the Arab Group’s speech and the final document of the meeting.
Under the item of new business, participants reviewed the outcomes of the meeting of governmental experts on lethal autonomous weapons held in Geneva last March, emphasizing the importance of following up on this issue due to its increasing military, legal and humanitarian dimensions.
The Republic of Yemen was represented at the meeting by Ambassador Najwa Abdullah Al-Serri, a member of the Permanent Delegation, and Dr. Ali Mohammed Al-Awlaki, along with Mr. Abubakar Abdo Saif, Manager of International Relations at YCA, in a confirmation of the authority’s role in supporting national and international efforts to combat trafficking. and enhancing port security.
